Clarence Franklin Cheek, better known as Franklin, or just “Cheek”, born on January 20, 1941, in the Browndale Community of Pulaski County, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. A cherished figure in his community, Franklin leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and a commitment to service.
A proud United States Army National Guard veteran, Mr. Cheek's dedication to his country was surpassed only by his love and affection for his family. After graduating from Hawkinsville High School in 1959, he began a lifetime of work in the Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base where he worked in and later retired from several fields including facilities maintenance and safety, computer operations, and computer programming. Beginning in 1963 , Franklin joined the Georgia Army National Guard serving as a Staff Sergeant in the 48th Brigade in Hawkinsville, and later retiring as a Sergeant First Class and an instructor at the Georgia Military Institute. His 37 year career was marked by a steadfast commitment to excellence and mentorship, influencing the lives of many.
Franklin held a deep love for his faith, enjoying his Sunday School Class at Broad Street Baptist Church and serving several terms on the Deacon Board and on numerous committees. His enthusiasm for learning and teaching was evident not only in his professional life but also through his hobbies. He enjoyed spending time outdoors on his farm, particularly fishing with his granddaughters, and tending to his dogs and cats , and at various times, to his cows and goats. He was known for his delightful baking skills, often crafting delectable teacakes and pecan pies for family and friends. Additionally, Franklin had a creative spirit, expressed through his writing of short stories and poetry, with some pieces published in the International Library of Poetry.
Franklin is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years Patricia Helms Cheek, by his parents, Robert Spears Cheek and Clifford Bohannon Cheek, by eleven brothers and sisters, and many brothers and sisters in-law. His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey touched by love and devotion.
He is survived by his son Clarence “Rence” Franklin Cheek, Jr. (Tiffany), his granddaughters India Margaret Cheek and Clare Frances Cheek, his sister-in-law Latrelle Helms Bembry (Dr. John W. Bembry), and many numerous nieces and nephews.
