GEORGE RICHARD WOODS, SR. Mr. Woods, the son of the late John Thomas Woods, Sr. and Stella Singletary Woods, was born February 8, 1923 at the family’s home in the Blue Springs area of Pulaski County. He was retired from Robins Air Base in Warner Robins, Ga. After his retirement from the base, he farmed for many years with his oldest son Richard and had continued to manage the family farm. He also served as the poll manager at the Blue Springs voting precincts for several years. Mr. Woods was a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thrasha Barlow Woods, and siblings, Thomas Woods, Ruth Woodard and Mildred Griner. Besides his farming, his love of the land was also evident through his large vegetable garden he grew every year. He was a wonderful teacher and has passed on his vast knowledge of farming and gardening to his children, grandchildren and friends. He especially enjoyed growing different types of tomatoes and loved to share all of his bounty with his family and friends. George learned to master the art of cooking during his wife’s illness and continued that skill through the years by trying new recipes and sharing his accomplishments. His family’s favorites included his black walnut pound cakes, pecan pies, cornbread and his famous Brunswick stew. Mr. Woods died Thursday, March 11, 2010 in Hawkinsville, Ga. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 in Orange Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jim Dominey officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home.
